Behind the Scenes

The story behind the creation of the hypertexture.net website...

:: Design

First came the colour scheme : the Night Work colour palette by equinorev

Night Work

Then came the design : a liquid layout that allows the page to change width dynamically depending on the size of the user's screen area and enables this website to work effectively at resolutions of 800x600 pixels and above.

:: Coding

This website utilises the CSS Reset Reloaded script developed by Eric Meyer to ensure a coherent display across each of the popular web browsers, along with the CSS Sticker footer script by Ryan Fait.

To overcome Internet Explorer's idiosyncracies with the formatting of CSS, we have included conditional comments to correct errors with the rendering of this website.

We have also created a custom 404 error page that is consistent with the design of the site and features some parsed website content for anyone who has the misfortune to follow or enter a mistyped URL.

:: Accessibility

Several different methods have been employed to facilitate the navigation of the hypertexture.net website:

Access Keys

The main sections of the hypertexture.net web-site incorporate keyboard shortcuts to aid accessibility. These can be selected by pressing a combination of keys, which according to the particular web-browser you are using are as follows:

In most web browsers, access keys are activated by pressing Alt (on PC) or Ctrl (on Mac) simultaneously with the appropriate character on the keyboard. In Opera, the user presses Shift+Esc followed by the access key. In Mozilla Firefox 2.0 the access key keyboard combination has changed to Alt+Shift, while in Amaya, the preferences allow the user the option of choosing Ctrl or Alt. In Konqueror on Linux, the Ctrl key is pressed and released, and then the access key is pressed. Whilst Mozilla and Firefox will execute the corresponding links immediately on the press of the access key, IE will just focus on the link and require Enter to be pressed in order to activate the link.

Text Re-sizing

All text on the hypertexture.net website has been assigned a relative size, which allows the user to adjust the size of the text throughout the website by selecting the relevent option from the menu of their web browser.

Acronyms

Any acronyms that appear on the website are underlined as: '     ', which display the definition of the acronym as a tooltip when the user rests their cursor over one.

:: Security

The issue of email injection, whereby vulnerabilities in the contact form can be exploited to use your email system for the distribution of spam, has been resolved in the deployment of the hypertexture website.

:: Search Engine Optimisation

To assist with the indexing of this website in search engines, we have used the sitemap protocol to submit listings of the pages of the hypertexture website to Google and Yahoo! We have also included a robots.txt file for other search engines that do not currently support the sitemap protocol.

:: Statistics

hypertexture.net utilises Google Analytics to track visits to this website and recommends its use in all the projects that we undertake.
